October in North Florida can be a little confusing.
You might wake up to cooler temperatures, enjoy a warm afternoon, and still have the air conditioner running before dinner. With weather like that, turning on the heat may be one of the last things on your mind.
But eventually, that first genuinely chilly morning arrives.
And that’s not when you want to discover that your heating system isn’t working.
Testing your heat before you actually need it is a simple way to avoid an uncomfortable surprise later in the season. It also gives you time to address potential heating problems before cooler weather makes HVAC service more urgent.
For many homes in our area, the heating system may sit unused for months at a time. During our long cooling season, homeowners become very familiar with the sound of the AC starting. The heating side of the system, meanwhile, can go largely forgotten.
That’s why fall is a good time for a quick test.
Choose a cooler morning or evening and switch your thermostat to heating mode. Set the temperature slightly above the current indoor temperature so the system receives a call for heat.
Then pay attention.
Does the system start normally? Does warm air begin coming from the vents? Does your home gradually become more comfortable?
You aren’t trying to heat the house dramatically. You’re simply confirming that the system responds and appears ready when you need it.
Depending on your equipment, you may notice a slightly different sound when the heating system operates compared with air conditioning. That’s not automatically a problem.
What deserves more attention is a system that doesn’t start, repeatedly shuts down, produces unusual noises, or fails to provide heat.
You may also notice an odor the first time the heat runs.
After sitting unused, dust can collect on portions of heating equipment, and a temporary dusty smell can sometimes occur during the first operation of the season. It should generally disappear relatively quickly.
A strong or persistent burning odor is different and shouldn’t simply be ignored. If something smells unusual or concerning, shut the system down and have it professionally inspected.
Testing early gives you another advantage: time to respond.
When everyone waits until the first cold morning to discover their heat isn’t working, HVAC companies can quickly become busy with similar calls. Finding a problem ahead of time gives you an opportunity to schedule service before you’re sitting in a cold house waiting for help.
It’s also worth remembering that your heating and cooling equipment are often closely connected.
In many North Florida homes, heat pumps provide both cooling and heating. That means equipment you’ve relied on throughout the summer may also be responsible for keeping your home warm.
A heating test can sometimes reveal a problem you simply wouldn’t notice while the system was operating in cooling mode.
Fall is also a natural time to consider professional HVAC service if your system has shown signs of trouble.
Maybe there were issues last winter that never got addressed. Perhaps your heating system made an unusual sound, struggled to warm the house, or simply hasn’t been inspected in quite some time.
Addressing those concerns before colder weather arrives can provide some valuable peace of mind.
At Epic A/C, we provide heating solutions and heating system repairs in addition to air conditioning services. Our goal is to help homeowners stay comfortable regardless of which direction the temperature decides to go.
And in North Florida, sometimes it goes in both directions on the same day.
Your heating system may spend most of October waiting patiently in the background. That’s okay. But before you actually need it, give it a chance to prove it’s ready.
A few minutes spent testing your heat today could save you from a much colder surprise later.
